Cathy Anderson, Senior Editor with LinkedIn News Australia has penned an interesting thought piece on what we are prepared to sacrifice monetarily and in the mind for the job we love. The idea is based on athletes selected for the Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games who although have reached a huge milestone – it hasn’t come cheaply.
Anderson states that a 2023 report from the fundraising body Australian Sports Foundation revealed that 46% of Australia’s elite athletes over the age of 18 earn less than $23,000 per annum, and 42% of those aged 18 to 34 suffer poor mental health as a result.
Many athletes rely on family support, grants from government or organisations or support themselves with a job — and juggle training around it. In response, Olympic beach volleyball gold medallist Natalie Cook established the Aussie Athlete Fund, which aims to raise $1 million for 100 aspiring Olympic athletes annually — and is assisting 12 athletes for Paris.
Personal Sacrifice
What are your thoughts about the financial viability of a career in sport or anywhere? What would you give up achieving the ultimate, or take a pay cut to get a foot in? Maybe staying in a toxic workplace because the money is mint?
This question prompts reflection on the personal sacrifices one might be willing to make for a job they are passionate about. Here are some considerations:
- Time: Are you willing to work longer hours, weekends, or holidays?
- Social Life: Can you handle missing out on social events or time with friends and family?
- Financial Stability: Are you prepared to take a lower salary or forgo financial benefits for a job you love?
- Health: Can you maintain your physical and mental well-being despite the job’s demands?
- Personal Pursuits: Are you ready to set aside hobbies or personal projects to focus on your work?
Answering these questions can help determine the level of commitment and sacrifice you are willing to make for your career.
The Trade-Off
For most people, it becomes apparent sooner or later that, to move forward, something must give. Growth of any kind demands a trade-off – something comfortable or familiar that must be let go so you can realise a dream.
Are you kicking off a new career in a new field? The harsh reality is that you could get those “started from the bottom” Drake feels when you leave that cushy job you’ve been in and accept a low-paying, entry-level position.
There’s the relearning of new skills or even further study as well. Depending on where you are in your current career, this can feel like a frustrating step back in time. Plus, the stress and uncertainty (and thrill) is also on your loved ones!
So, you have to ask yourself: What am I willing to sacrifice to grow? What am I willing to release now to get closer to my career goals in the future? 🚀
