We spend most of our waking hours at our desk, whether that’s WFH or office-based, so keeping it clean and minimalist is perfect for our productivity. There’s no need to go full OCD, just shave down the clutter a tad. Three dirty coffee mugs, an unused keyboard and a pre-war apple have no place next to you.
Start fresh by clearing out the mess and becoming your most productive self. Are you finally ready to boost your productivity and motivation by undertaking a little office organisation?
Let’s zero in on three simple ways to wow your workspace to get your brain back in the game and quit drowning in disorder.
Started from the Bottom
You’ll find that most of the assorted items scattered around your workspace belong in one of the overstuffed drawers of your desk. Clean out everything you don’t need any more and organise loose stationery with a drawer tidy. You’ll find that suddenly you have a lot more space available and items are easier to locate. Your brain will thank you.
Tackle the Top
Shelves can be a great tool for organising your physical files and folders if they’re kept in order and maintained. Have you used that folder from 1999 recently? If not, maybe it’s time to archive those files, or shred them and make space for relevant ones that you use more regularly.
Fix the Flow
Have your phone at a comfortable distance, all your files within reach and your drawers tidily organised. You’ll soon see how much time you save when you know exactly where everything is.
Also, countless studies have shown that having a little greenery around can brighten anyone’s mood and improve concentration, both through the added fresh oxygen and simply by the colour green itself. Grab a trendy little terrarium for your desk to be looking on point and feeling fresh inside and out.
Even more Wow
A few other ways to wow include adding soothing aromas to your workspace. Why? Offices can be a cacophony of different perfumes, from tuna lunches to photocopier ozone. Create your own scent oasis with essential oils and dried herbs – peppermint oil has been known to increase alertness, while lavender helps with anxiety! A pot of filter coffee with fresh Brazilian beans helps too.
Finally, sitting at a desk all day can be incredibly strenuous on your muscles, particularly in your back and shoulders. This can distract you from tasks at hand when they start to ache and can totally sap your energy. Start doing some regular stretches and even invest in a Posturepedic chair cushion for added support. It’s all cool, they’re hip now.
