Redundancy Season: Your Time to Thrive

It’s redundancy season in agency land.

A new year, a tough economic climate and the endless push to innovate means that many of the agencies in the public relations, digital marketing, advertising and design sectors are cutting out the deadwood. Specifically, senior staff on hefty salaries are being replaced with junior to mid-level staff who cost less, bring new ideas to the table, and have an updated skill set.

If you are a junior or at mid-level in this industry, now is a fantastic time to take the next step in your career. The job listings section of our website is bursting with juicy new opportunities, so keep your eyes peeled and your resume looking trim and tidy.

If you’re in a senior position, what I’m saying is probably not news to you. You’ve seen the writing on the wall, are feeling the pressure and have maybe even seen others made redundant around you. This is an incredibly stressful situation to be in, but you do not need to remain passive and wait for the tap on the shoulder.

Don’t wait for the right job to come along. Create it.

To thrive in this environment, you need to get proactive about your employment future. 90% of people take a passive approach to their career path; they wait for the right job to come along, they wait for a promotion, and they wait to be made redundant. My advice to you is to make yourself part of the 10% that engineers their ideal employment situation.

The first step to achieving this involves putting your feelers out to your network and making sure you’re visible to the people that matter (that could mean your well-connected ex-colleague, the HR head of your dream agency, or a small business that has just started reeling in the big fish and is looking to scale up). The next step is to reach out and demonstrate the value you can add to a particular organisation. Maybe there’s a problem you can identify from the outside and offer a solution to, or a missing component of their PR strategy which your skillset could fulfil. Make yourself an essential commodity that their organisation cannot do without.

At the senior level, you create your dream role, or you wait a very long time for the right one to come along.

Don’t be a sitting duck! Be proactive, not reactive.
