Mock Tasks: Show Me The Money!

Hive mind! Should Talent be paid to submit a mini-task or brief during the interview process?

This question comes up regularly, and Agency Iceberg feels that paying a Talent to complete a mock task that will take longer than 2 hours to finish, has MANY benefits.

Completing tasks can be a terrific way for the client to see a Talent’s level of strategic thinking, as well as their ability to perform under pressure. Plus, when the client pays for the candidates’ hard work and time, it is a great reflection of their own culture!

However, we always need to ensure there are clear boundaries in place to avoid any frustration and disappointment.

We think:

🟣 If the mini task is less than 2 hours long (in prep), then the task is unpaid.
🟡 If it takes more than 2 hours of prep work to complete the task, then the client pays up.
🟢 That’s the Client to the Talent – not the Recruiter to the Talent. 🙂

Arguments for Paying Candidates

  1. Value of Work: If the brief requires substantial effort or involves solving a real-world problem that the company could potentially use, it is essentially work and should be compensated.
  2. Fairness: Candidates are already investing time and energy in the interview process. Requiring unpaid deliverables adds another layer of unpaid labour.
  3. Equity: Paying for briefs ensures that candidates from all backgrounds can participate without financial strain, promoting inclusivity.
  4. It Signals Professionalism: Offering payment for submissions demonstrates respect for candidates’ time and sets a tone for how the company values work.

Arguments Against Paying Candidates

  1. Screening Tool: Companies often use briefs as a way to gauge a candidate’s interest and fit for the role. Paying everyone might not be practical, especially for roles with a high volume of applicants.
