Know Your Worth: Why Underselling Yourself Is the Worst Career Move You Can Make.
The job market is undeniably challenging right now. Competition is high, hiring processes are longer, and many candidates are understandably worried about getting their foot in the door.
But here’s something we hear far too often… Recently, I spoke with a talented marketing professional who had just relocated to Melbourne and was looking for a digital marketing role.
When we discussed salary expectations, they told me they were happy to work for $8 an hour. Not because that’s what they were worth, because they believed they had to.
“I don’t have local experience.”, “Maybe I should work for free until they like me.”, “I want to show I’m not motivated by money.”
It’s a mindset that many jobseekers fall into—but it’s one that can do more harm than good.
The Reality
Employers don’t expect you to work for free. Nor should they.
Accepting well below-market pay doesn’t prove you’re hardworking or committed. More often, it undervalues your skills, weakens your negotiating position and can unintentionally signal a lack of confidence in your own abilities.
Your salary shouldn’t be based solely on your postcode or how recently you’ve arrived. It should reflect the value you bring through your experience, transferable skills and potential.
So, What’s the Better Approach?
If you’re worried about proving yourself, there are far better ways than drastically discounting your worth.
Instead:
- Ask for a salary that’s aligned with your experience and current market rates.
- Suggest a structured probation or review period, such as a 30, 60 or 90-day salary review based on agreed performance outcomes.
- Focus on value, not desperation! Employers hire problem-solvers—not because they’re the cheaper option.
Remember…
We’re all working for money.
The culture, career progression, great leaders and exciting clients are all important—but remuneration matters too. It reflects the value of your contribution and helps establish a healthy, professional relationship from day one.
Starting from a position of confidence creates a much stronger foundation than trying to earn someone’s respect through underpricing yourself.
Our Advice
As recruiters, one of the most important conversations we have with candidates isn’t just about finding the right role—it’s about helping them understand their value.
Know your market. Know your skills. Know your worth.
Because the right employer isn’t looking for the cheapest candidate—they’re looking for the right one!
